Carol Petherbridge

Carol Petherbridge is a licensed naturopathic physician in Oregon and was appointed by
the Governor to serve on the Oregon Board of Naturopathic Examiners from 1992 through 1995. Over the past ten years of her practice, Dr. Petherbridge has specialized in women’s health care, working with the full spectrum of hormonal, fertility and related medical issues. She encourages her patients to be self-responsible and takes the role of physician as educator seriously. Marilyn Lerner

Marilyn Lerner is an Oregon state licensed midwife. For the past fifteen years, she has been working with women and families through all phases of the childbearing cycle, including pre-conception, pregnancy, birth and postpartum. Her scope of practice includes well-woman care and educating and counselling women on fertility concerns and natural family planning.

AWAKENING (A PERSONAL STORY)


At 23, my body started "revving up" for a baby. although I had never thought of myself as a mother (that wasn't in my plan), nevertheless every month at mid-cycle, I just ached and yearned to make a baby. I drove my partner crazy, and was extremely PMS-ey as well. At 24, I experienced a first trimester miscarriage. This was an unplanned pregnancy, and the miscarriage was my first shocking realization that I had conceived. It was a very simple and uncomplicated process which I went through at home.

The experience of miscarriage opened my heart in a deep way: There was a world of grief and tenderness and longing inside, and a hunger to hear other women's stories. I discovered an intense fascination with the whole concept of women's bodies: women's cycles, how they constantly change and flow, women's feelings, how they change and flow, and how all of these rhythms and cycles intertwine. I was sure it was only other women who could understand me. Tears flowed freely as I read "Our Bodies, Ourselves", cover to cover in the days after the miscarriage; I bought midwifery textbooks and read them with a medical dictionary at my side.

The miscarriage was a doorway for me which led into a lifetime exploration of female cycles...moontime, fertility, sexuality, birth;...an exploration which has gone on for the last 18 years, highlighted by the births of my four sons and enriched by a homebirth midwifery practice.

Womanhood remains a fascinating and beautiful mystery to me. I LOVE the ebbing flowing nature of woman, and her reflection in the natural cycles of the world around us. I feel my fertility/sexuality as a gift which so perfectly connects me to the ground, my Earth Mother, and provides a vessel for Spirit, love and divinity to flow through me. the mystery calls to me deeply. How can I ever be done learning about it?

I look around in our culture and see what we have done with our birthright: with this mysterious gift of the feminine and fertility. See the nice little box she lives in, cellophane wrapped, with Barbie high heels and Playboy figure, feminine-hygiene deodorized, synthetically hormoned, and conveniently sterilized after a mechanized, anesthetized birth...EVERYTHING IS UNDER CONTROL. What need have we for cycles anyway?

Hmmmmm...I have a dream of women and men waking up to the awesome treasure of their sexuality. A dream of letting her out of the box.

I have a dream of women waking up to who they really are inside. A dream of women and men universally coming to appreciate the female energy, and with that, respecting and treasuring the gifts of their fertility and sexuality. My dream includes seeing young teenage girls who are just jazzed about their natural womanness, just loving their bodies and holding them SACRED. My dream includes couples birthing babies out of conscious choice, welcome and cherished.

I see Woman's Window (TM) as a stepping stone toward that dream becoming real. The planet is ready for this. Woman's Window (TM) offers women a "window into their fertility". It offers an opportunity for awareness shift, for consciousness shift, another way to look within and begin to listen for that ancient knowledge we carry inside.

That long ago miscarriage gifted me with a not-so-gentle shake-up, awakening me to my womanhood. Perhaps Woman's Window (TM) will provide an easier, earlier awakening for our daughters and for the young men who honor them.
